Practice Time!

It was a beautiful day at Piper Glen Country Club in Charlotte. It was sunny with a slight wind. I felt like I was at the beach; maybe Jupiter, Florida, where my niece Samantha lives, unfortunately with Juvenile Diabetes. She was in my thoughts on this day. Lynne Foreman asked me to greet and welcome her guests who donated their time to raise awareness and funds for JDRF. I had the opportunity to greet several Carolina Panther Football Players and their coach, as well as other influential people as they walked by with their golf bags on their shoulders. They were all here because this horrible disease was close and dear to them. It was an honor and a privilege to be around so many supporters for this worthy cause. This was a chance to share Samantha's story and my connection.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an Autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research, including $101 million in FY2009. In FY2009, JDRF funded research projects in 22 countries throughout the world, including more than 40 human clinical trials.

Samantha ~ A Victory SMILE after Samantha'S Mile!

My beautiful niece Samantha was diagnosed at age 11 with Juvenile Diabetes. She has to be very aware of her blood-sugar count and insulin levels regularly and has to administer insulin shots to herself. My brother Keith and my Sister-In-Law Michele, Samantha’s brother Reese, and other family and friends close to her monitor her stability daily. She has become educated and responsible of her new lifestyle with GRACE.

It is very puzzling to try to understand why a little girl like Samantha, who has a cheery disposition, loves life and all who are around her, was chosen to have this disease. I believe it is because she has the capability to connect with others easily, make you laugh, and when you look into her big blue eyes you melt and just listen. She has the capability to influence and encourage others around her to help with her mission of finding a CURE for Juvenile Diabetes. These qualities can command an audience! She is a role model for her peers, as she has turned a negative into a positive, a disease into a life-long challenge and a rainy day into a sunny one!

She walked in Samantha’S Mile on March 6th, 2010 in West Palm Beach, Florida; together they raised a total of $4,100! Her goal is $5,000! She needs only $900.00 left to reach her goal to help fund the scientific research necessary to find a CURE for Juvenile Diabetes!

A Quote from Samantha:

"I was diagnosed with type 1, or juvenile, diabetes last year. The diagnosis was a shock and has changed my life forever. I now have to prick my finger to test my blood sugar and inject myself with insulin multiple times daily just to stay alive. I constantly have to think about what I eat, when I eat and how it is affecting my body throughout the day and night. I refuse to let this disease beat me, but it may be a never-ending battle. I draw strength from the very real possibility that a cure will be found in my lifetime."

Please take the time and help my niece with her goal by visiting her site below. Thank you!
