Big Tom Classic Charity Golf Tournament

I was so honored to be asked to help volunteer at The Big Tom Classic. This is a golf tournament in honor of Tom Israel who passed away on June 20, 2005 of a cerebral aneurysm. Over the past five years, the Big Tom Classic has raised more then $75,000. These funds have been effectively used to aid in stroke research, stroke treatment and to promote public awareness. Tournament funds have also aided in making Mission Hospital the first certified Stroke Center in Western North Carolina, they have supported the first annual Aphasia Conference for stroke survivors, and provided home blood pressure monitors for hypertension management, just to name a few.

There are a lot of studies that suggest that oral health, and gum disease in particular, are related to serious conditions like heart disease," says periodontist Sally Cram, DDS, a spokeswoman for the American Dental Association.
